Acheson Doyle Partners began working with the National Park Service in 2008 to rehabilitate this historic building that once served as New York City’s first airport terminal as the Visitor Center for Floyd Bennett Field. During the project’s first phase, the main entrance, lobby and rotunda were restored, and new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, security and communications systems were installed. Exhibition spaces showcasing the history of the building were designed for the first floor. The masonry facades were restored and existing windows replaced. Fulfilling the Park Service’s goal of consolidating all of the administrative offices at Floyd Bennett Field, the second floor was renovated and repurposed as offices for the project’s second phase. Approval by NYS SHPO was required for work in both phases.
