Old St. Joseph’s Church

Old St. Joseph’s Church

Th e intent of the project was to provide accessibility to the main church via the main courtyard entry, as well as provide access to the lower level of the church (Barbelin Hall).  As the oldest church in Philadelphia, as well as being located in the Independence Hall District, the integration of accessibility had to be carefully curated to blend in with the historic fabric of the building. Coordination and relocation with the historic elements, such as the existing stone bust and plaque , the existing door, and the expansion of the stone platform were key components in retaining the aesthetic of the courtyard that parishioners, visitors and tourists would experience.
