Acheson Doyle Partners was retained by St. Joseph’s church to lead a restoration program of the landmarked Greek Revival church building, its historic detailing neglected through years of deferred maintenance. Work included the complete salvage of the existing portico stone steps, restoration of existing metal stair and fencing, and refurbishment of custom metal castings to match the original details. The original monumental wood doors were removed, restored and fitted with new hardware. Existing wood side doors were accurately recreated with modern egress hardware to match the original doors that were beyond restoration. Careful consideration was given to exterior painting preparation specifications for existing wood and stucco surface, with the color selection including an accent red color on the doors for liturgical reasons. Exterior lighting was added to address the client’s concern for nighttime security. All exterior lighting fixtures were installed out of plain sight and positioned to accentuate the simple temple style of the church.
