The history of Floyd Bennett Field’s Administration Building, little known as New York City’s first airport terminal (built in 1931), has been overshadowed by the Navy’s acquisition of the building and field in 1942. In actuality, the building became the genesis in the 1930s for many epoch-making flights by such pioneers as Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart. The building also serves as a literal gateway to the Gateway National Recreation Area the nation’s largest urban park which sees more than 1,000,000 visitors a year. Acheson Doyle Partners restoration of the building is transforming this facility into the Ryan Visitor Center for the National Park Service.
